Video Progress Log

Blog Post

Entry 1
Completing the brainstorm has given me insight right into what I want to base my proect on, something to do with music in industrial design. Experimenting with ideas and developing and progressing naturally lead me to something im passionate about, music. This was quite surprising and was a welsome suprise.

Entry 2
Developing my idea in tutorials and on my own, I have decided I want to show how industrial design has influenced the instruments an therefore the music we have created over the years. Considering using different instruments from diferent development periods to show development.

Entry 3
I have decided that I am going to focous on Speakers, Cables, Guirats, equlaisars and other musically related products. I will attempt to make a test sample in the next few days.

Entry 4

Well, procrastinaton had overwhelmed me once more, not much to report. I've had a go at a story board but havent got far.

Entry 5
Storyboards complete!! Success, just in time for the tutorial aswell haha. My only thouhts are to how long Im actually going to have to show each different item I have used in my storyboards. 30-40 seconds only allows for 3-4 seconds for each item. I might have to consider refining my idea/development to less instruments if i want to focous on the development of a few as opposed to many instrumets showing no development.

Entry 6
Test sample went well. My concern regarding how much time we actually have has been fortified by this task. 3-4 seconds really isint that long. I am going t attempt to reduce the story' of my propesed video so I can really develope the instruments. This development is going to be the main focous, so its more important to show the dvelopment, the influence of industrial design itself as opposed to heaps of random stuff.

Entry 7

Time to start taking photos! Im going to try and get a cheaner, whiter balance in my media. the feedback from the tutorial has taught me a fw things that should really help. I think Ill approach this by gathering oo much footage and picking the approperiate and best stuff as opposed to filming a little and building on it.

Entry 8

Scratch that last idea, I have found that it is important to asses what you have so you can see/imporve on techniques and flow. If you take heaps of pictures/footage all at once, youc ant tell how accurate youre alignment is etc. Slow and steady wins the race.

Entry 9

I am sturging with showing the movement of the keys as was evident in my test sample, there are simply too many paramenters to align to get a smooth/ consistant flow at high resolution/framerarte. I am seriously curious how thers are getting such intense quality and fluidity of media.

Entry 10

It has dawned on me that my problem is moving the camera as oppposed to moving the objects. This is an issue as i cant simply move the world around my camera when what i'd need to  move is an entire piano (HEAVY!!) and to align all the proposed moving elements. Instead, I a going to use pan-shots across the instruments and swich intermitantly between instruments to realy encompass the development.

Entry 11

My footage looks great.. at this stage. Its going to be interesting cutting and shortenting the masses of photos/footage to bring it down to 30-40 seconds. Hopefully it turns out good. I think It will. I hope.

Entry 12

Film in interesting. I've ended showing less and at the same more than i had origionally aticipated. 30 seconds really isint long. Im pusing 55 seconds at thsi stage, futher cutting and possibly changing the speed so its all constant and apropreiate is my next mission.

Entry 13

Film complete! Im pretty happy with how it turned out. I ended up using my test sample funnily enough. I think its a clever way to show human interaction and imperfection is our application of instruments. This really related to design and creativity in general. It should be pretty easy to write the 300 word submission, i have so much to talk about. Next thing on the list is to add sound. Im thinking about using a keyboard based synth and digital audio workstation to create some music that shows the direction and development of the piano, the fundamental instrument that we use today as the basis/starting point for most music.

Entry 14

Sound track complete, took me a while but ti sounds good. Ive spent some time making it relate to the video track as well as i can but some timming issues were really a struggle. Overall I quite like how it looks and sounds. It shows what I am trying to convey and it does so well. My flow isint perfect but then neither is music and neither is design itself. I think this adds to the overall message more than it takes away and am going to leave it as it is. I think it is important to show the message, to identify and fortify it, this seems to do so well.

Entry 15

I have left my 300 word submission only semi complete untill now because until now I havent been entirley sure of my design standpoint. What I have intended to show and what my video shows has changed, almost fighting each other as time has progressed. now I feel like the have come to some sort of agreement about what the final product will teach the viewer. I like this because it feels as if I can feel and even see 'the pendulum swing' right before my eyes. This will be my last entry, I will attempt to sum up the entire project in my 300 word outline. By writing conclusivly now will simply not be appropreiate as in explaining myself and my actions I describe the project. I think it is better to Explain the intention/viewpoint of the project and let it speak for itself. The intention is laid out in the outline, the evidence is present in the video obviously and ofcourse the method is relativly detialed in these blog posts. I hope this hasnt been too painfull to read ;)

Enjoy my video!
