A New Way of Seeing.

Industrial design has shaped the world in practicaly every way imaginable, ever since man first started using tools.
From the wheel to the printing press, the canal to the steam engine, industrial design has and still continues to make its mark on society and humanity. Gone are the days of drastic and revolutionary feats of marvel, today we live in a world when good design goes un-noticed. This is particurarly the case with musical instruments. We can easily identify when something is different, regardless of how obvious or subtle, we can almost always tell when somethings changed. To notice a diference and yet to be unable to pinpoint what has caused it is what apart the best from the rest.

When a musicain picks up/sits down at/with an unfamilar instrument, they can imedatly tell how an instrument 'feels.' Be it a dusty guitar from a back room or an old piano in a church, some insturments just 'feel good.'

My clip addresses this phenomonon as it shows the development of instruments, specifically the guitar and piano. The way industrial design has  created a new way of seeing is expressed through the development of technology and the resultant change in the music we can create. I have taken the seeing aspect metaphorically and suggest the 'new way' be the new technology and how the technology allows us to 'see,' new things with senses other than our eyes.

Techniques I used were a large amount of tracks and pan's across diferent instruments
to show the similarities and differences. I also paid attention to show a clear distinction between each instrument to emphasise the change, an absolutly somth transition would not have garnished the message in the way I intended. Also it  is ineresting to note my use of the test sample stop motion secquence showing the movement/playing of the analouge piano. I used this to emphasise the inperfection which human interaction with these prcision-enginered instruments creates. It is through our slight errors and quirks that music gains the character or expreson as we know it. As the world heads in an increasingly standardised and digital direction it is important to hold on to certain elements of music, specificaly the parts that make it so expressive. What makes it personal. What makes it human.

This metaphonr can be related to any form of design itself. Since design is an expression of who and what we are, It is important to keep elements of humanity. In the age of a youth raised in photoshop and every other form of digital creation, we need to remember who we are and what we are doing and where we've come from. If we dont know where we've come from, how can we know where we're going? "The man who does not know hostory is destaned to repeat it."

Video Progress Log

Blog Post

Entry 1
Completing the brainstorm has given me insight right into what I want to base my proect on, something to do with music in industrial design. Experimenting with ideas and developing and progressing naturally lead me to something im passionate about, music. This was quite surprising and was a welsome suprise.

Entry 2
Developing my idea in tutorials and on my own, I have decided I want to show how industrial design has influenced the instruments an therefore the music we have created over the years. Considering using different instruments from diferent development periods to show development.

Entry 3
I have decided that I am going to focous on Speakers, Cables, Guirats, equlaisars and other musically related products. I will attempt to make a test sample in the next few days.

Entry 4

Well, procrastinaton had overwhelmed me once more, not much to report. I've had a go at a story board but havent got far.

Entry 5
Storyboards complete!! Success, just in time for the tutorial aswell haha. My only thouhts are to how long Im actually going to have to show each different item I have used in my storyboards. 30-40 seconds only allows for 3-4 seconds for each item. I might have to consider refining my idea/development to less instruments if i want to focous on the development of a few as opposed to many instrumets showing no development.

Entry 6
Test sample went well. My concern regarding how much time we actually have has been fortified by this task. 3-4 seconds really isint that long. I am going t attempt to reduce the story' of my propesed video so I can really develope the instruments. This development is going to be the main focous, so its more important to show the dvelopment, the influence of industrial design itself as opposed to heaps of random stuff.

Entry 7

Time to start taking photos! Im going to try and get a cheaner, whiter balance in my media. the feedback from the tutorial has taught me a fw things that should really help. I think Ill approach this by gathering oo much footage and picking the approperiate and best stuff as opposed to filming a little and building on it.

Entry 8

Scratch that last idea, I have found that it is important to asses what you have so you can see/imporve on techniques and flow. If you take heaps of pictures/footage all at once, youc ant tell how accurate youre alignment is etc. Slow and steady wins the race.

Entry 9

I am sturging with showing the movement of the keys as was evident in my test sample, there are simply too many paramenters to align to get a smooth/ consistant flow at high resolution/framerarte. I am seriously curious how thers are getting such intense quality and fluidity of media.

Entry 10

It has dawned on me that my problem is moving the camera as oppposed to moving the objects. This is an issue as i cant simply move the world around my camera when what i'd need to  move is an entire piano (HEAVY!!) and to align all the proposed moving elements. Instead, I a going to use pan-shots across the instruments and swich intermitantly between instruments to realy encompass the development.

Entry 11

My footage looks great.. at this stage. Its going to be interesting cutting and shortenting the masses of photos/footage to bring it down to 30-40 seconds. Hopefully it turns out good. I think It will. I hope.

Entry 12

Film in interesting. I've ended showing less and at the same more than i had origionally aticipated. 30 seconds really isint long. Im pusing 55 seconds at thsi stage, futher cutting and possibly changing the speed so its all constant and apropreiate is my next mission.

Entry 13

Film complete! Im pretty happy with how it turned out. I ended up using my test sample funnily enough. I think its a clever way to show human interaction and imperfection is our application of instruments. This really related to design and creativity in general. It should be pretty easy to write the 300 word submission, i have so much to talk about. Next thing on the list is to add sound. Im thinking about using a keyboard based synth and digital audio workstation to create some music that shows the direction and development of the piano, the fundamental instrument that we use today as the basis/starting point for most music.

Entry 14

Sound track complete, took me a while but ti sounds good. Ive spent some time making it relate to the video track as well as i can but some timming issues were really a struggle. Overall I quite like how it looks and sounds. It shows what I am trying to convey and it does so well. My flow isint perfect but then neither is music and neither is design itself. I think this adds to the overall message more than it takes away and am going to leave it as it is. I think it is important to show the message, to identify and fortify it, this seems to do so well.

Entry 15

I have left my 300 word submission only semi complete untill now because until now I havent been entirley sure of my design standpoint. What I have intended to show and what my video shows has changed, almost fighting each other as time has progressed. now I feel like the have come to some sort of agreement about what the final product will teach the viewer. I like this because it feels as if I can feel and even see 'the pendulum swing' right before my eyes. This will be my last entry, I will attempt to sum up the entire project in my 300 word outline. By writing conclusivly now will simply not be appropreiate as in explaining myself and my actions I describe the project. I think it is better to Explain the intention/viewpoint of the project and let it speak for itself. The intention is laid out in the outline, the evidence is present in the video obviously and ofcourse the method is relativly detialed in these blog posts. I hope this hasnt been too painfull to read ;)

Enjoy my video!

Project 3, Group Task 2

Iron Curtain

Iron Curtain is a company which sells the revolutionary product which aids people in "ironing out the creases" of design. This new product uses space age technology to transform different designs to design forms that suit the time. This iron straightens out older designs creating a new, modern finish. Our intentions were to try to sell our product in a cliche mid-morning advertisement, aimed at an audience, ranging from housewives to retirees. Through the use of stop motion with an increased audio speed we feel we have taken a humorous approach to a stereotypical genre. Through the use of voice overs, we have attempted to create an atmosphere similar to that of a home shopping channel. We showed our product's intended use to "wow" audiences into buying our product. "Iron curtain" being repeated in conjunction with the phrase "wow" reinforces the product in the viewer's mind. The slogan "ironing out the creases" and positive messages within the advertisement are deliberately slower and clearer than the negative side effects. We chose to do this because typical advertisements like this often pass over the negative side effects of the product in a hurried manner so the viewer is less likely to notice. Exaggerating this highlights the ridiculous nature of these advertisement's attempts to gloss over negative associations with their product.

Project 2: Brainstorm/Development

Project 2: Brainstorm/Development

Here are my brainstorm words on A4.

As I was doing them I noticed that I slowly moved towards a certain type of movement, described by a verb. Its interesting looking back and seeing how I slowly began to add more and more detail and animation to my brainstorms with each new idea until finally I start my storyboards.

I Like this ones characterization as one of my best, even though its simplistic, the effect on the viewer would be quite strong.

This one (above) I quite liked however the characterisation of the text was primarily comming form the sound idea. The Static word was also lacking in development.

Strike was quite clever, I like the proposed characterisation effect and particurarly the font.

This one was obviously my final project's initial concept. I like the font idea however I went for a more hand drawn style font as opposed to making my own due to time constraints and lac of previous knowledge. It is quite interesting looking back and seeing how much the initila movement and idea itself developed into a final piece of work.

I Really liked the idea of Zap however the static text was again a problem, even in the early stages so development ceased quite early. The sound in this one was again the most contributing factor to enhance characterization of the text as opposed to visual effects.

Drippy was one of my initial ideas, more focused on changing the text as opposed to characterizing it but it still had a lot of potential, this is one of the few that were being considered for the final project.

Slide was one of my favorites , quite effective ideas for characterisation however the initial conecept did focus on changing the text. Also the slide itself was hard to portray without being overly obvious so this one was left on the drawing board.

Drift was the most promising concept and had the most potential in my opinion. I like the movement and the cheeky-ness of the characters as the develop and eventually become animate in the final presentation. The font was particularly pleasing for me as I felt it really reflected the personality of the character i was creating and contributed well to the over all effect of the piece.

Individual Work

This is my final 'Individual work' drawing.

For this task I chose a poster advertisement for Pink Floyd's 'The wall.'
The reason found this interesting is that it gives life to in-animate objects and portrays them as solider-like robots. In the movie, this effect is bewildering to the viewer. This utterly astonishing feat of impossibility really inspired me to explore this design style myself.
This seemed like an interesting and fun influence to use with my Section piece to create something similar of my own.

Touch and Draw

This is my final 'Touch and Draw' Photo.
The subject was a car crashing at speed.
